As the school year winds down, many times our maintenance and custodial staff get asked if we get the summer off. We continue to work throughout the summer and it's actually a very busy time of year.
One of our most important summer tasks is to deep clean our school buildings. All surfaces in every room get attention, including furnishings, equipment, fixtures, glass, ceilings, walls, and floors. General routine summer maintenance within our buildings include HVAC filters, coils, and condensates, greasing, pressure washing, lawn care and landscaping, bulbs and ballasts, and painting. We also use the summer time to get into classrooms for projects that can't be accomplished while class is in session.
In addition to normal summer cleaning and maintenance, the below projects are also taking place this summer:
- Whittier and Bluff Elementary will both be getting a new playground in the near future. They both will also be getting an HVAC upgrade to replace equipment that is nearing the end of its useful life.
- At our Transportation facility, a new building is being built and we hope to move into it in late August. One section will be a three bay service garage for buses and a wash bay. The lower section will be a staff room, restrooms, and office space.
Summer is also the time of year where interior furnishings get shuffled from building to building to accommodate school set-ups. On occasion pallets of new books replace older versions and classroom visual aids get updated. Other upgrades include a new phone system and some schools are getting new clocks and intercom systems. We will also be preparing a newly purchased building for classroom use. More details to come on that as we get closer to the beginning of next school year!
